When you get it wrong, the game will tell you where you’ve made a mistake. Some commands require you to enable developer level cheats. Ususally you have tro enter a command followed by the equals sign and a value at the end (1 for enable, 0 for disable). Sometimes you’ll have to enter an amount or an ordinal number, so play around with the commands until you get it right. Or you could check out the even cheaper, even older school Serious Sam: Double D.Keep in mind that most commands have a default value – 0 usually means “off”, while 1 means “on”. So, if you happen to be reading this at some future date when Sam's price has been inevitably slashed to something a bit less zany, then congratulations, mysterious man from beyond tomorrow! You can go ahead and pretend that three-and-a-half star score is actually a five. This is a game that provides hours of good, stupid fun, sure, but that just seems a bit steep for a game that's neither particularly novel nor very long from start to finish. In fact, I can really only think of one down side to Serious Sam - it costs $40. You know, like a gum commercial, except with zombies and shotguns. Each additional friend thrown into that frantic mix doubles the pleasure. The usual deathmatch options are there as well, but they're not likely to foster a culture of serious competition, and really, the game's strongest point isn't actually strategic depth, so much as the simple glee of running around enormous outdoor spaces while dodging the assault of dozens of single-minded monsters. The only thing more enjoyable than a borderline-mindless blast-a-thon is sharing it with friends. Honestly, Serious Sam can out-funny Duke Nukem with one frontal lobe tied behind its back.Įven better, Serious Sam 3: Before First Encounter (finally figured that out) features the return of the ever-glorious co-operative option. Even better, the game still enjoys the effortless B-movie sense of humor that manages to provoke the occasional chuckle without ever coming off like it's trying too hard. In fact, Serious Sam 3: Bilious French Erotica is essentially the Kraft Dinner of videogames: it's not sophisticated, or even particularly nutritious, but it is cheesy and comforting. It's not groundbreaking or thought provoking in any way, shape or form. There's something almost cozy about a game that expects nothing more of you than reflexes and an appreciation of cornball one-liners spouted by a hyper-masculine cartoon.

Just in case it isn't abundantly clear, I think all of this is absolutely brilliant. I suppose it's kind of nice to enjoy an occasional deviation from an otherwise unrelenting cavalcade of non-stop, gleefully unselfconscious ultra-violence. Well, for a couple minutes (at least), and you can just go ahead and do it anyway if you're so inclined and bloody minded enough to endure the resulting onslaught. That's right, there's actually a bit in here where Sam is discouraged from shooting a gun. One early encounter sends Sam into a darkened basement filled with spider eggs which will hatch and overwhelm him should he discharge a firearm.

This, if anything, makes iconically absurd enemies, like the screaming headless men who run at you while holding a bomb in each hand, even funnier.Įven though the series retains its trademark enormous arenas full of dozens of badguys, in several places it actually detours into narrow corridors, providing just the slightest hint of claustrophobia and paranoia. Humanity is under siege as the full force of Mental’s hordes spread across the world, ravaging what remains of a broken and beaten civilization. Gone is the cartoony style of the previous games, replaced with slick, bump mapped, HDR'd effects that take on familiar environments and enemies. Serious Sam 4 reignites the classic FPS series in a high-powered prequel loaded with an explosive arsenal, intergalactic carnage, and perfectly timed one-liners.

Serious Sam 3: Ballistic Flaming Enema, on the other hand, actually changes up the formula a bit for the first time in.

whatever the hell Duke Nukem became, Serious Sam stays true to his frantic ass-kicking principles.Įvery bit of that is par for the course when it comes to a Serious Sam game. Other fast-paced shooters starring an invincible jackass have moved on from their roots to embrace modernity, but where Doom has turned into a dark-room horror game and Duke Nukem has become. I suppose it serves as an adequate excuse for a guy to go around killing absolute crap-tons of aliens - in between dynamiting ancient monuments - but even Sam himself understands that saving Earth from the evil whatevers is far less important than shooting things while swearing at them. There's presumably a plot in here somewhere.
